A powerful parenting lesson from Jeff Bezos...

and it costs $0 (unlike your monthly Amazon bill)...

Howdy,

Jeff Bezos has built a behemoth in Amazon.

He shared some wisdom ~20 years ago about his strategy that stuck in my head.

And, while it makes total business sense, it’s even better parenting advice…

Today, we have:

1. Parenting thing: A powerful parenting lesson from Jeff Bezos.

2. Business thing: Play the character you want to be.

3. Internet thing: Show me the incentive. I’ll show you the behavior.

1. Parenting thing: A powerful parenting lesson from Jeff Bezos.

Two things are true…

  1. We all love trying to predict the future.

  2. We all suck at it.

While it may seem like Jeff Bezos has a crystal ball, it’s quite the opposite.

Here’s how he built Amazon’s business…

I very frequently get the question: "What's going to change in the next 10 years?"

I almost never get the question: "What's not going to change in the next 10 years?"

You can build a business strategy around the things that are stable in time…

Customers want low prices, and I know that's going to be true 10 years from now.

They want fast delivery; they want vast selection.

It's impossible to imagine a future 10 years from now where a customer comes up and says, "Jeff, I love Amazon; I just wish the prices were a little higher."

"I love Amazon; I just wish you'd deliver a little more slowly."

When you have something that you know is true…you can afford to put a lot of energy into it.

Cool, Adam. What’s the point?

Every day, you’re getting bombarded with new stuff…

  • Silent dangers

  • Parenting techniques.

  • Things you should be doing to improve the lives of your kids.

I get the idea of being tempted by all this.

But it’s hard to know what’s going to actually make an impact.

So, instead of trying to forecast the future…

It’s impossible to imagine a future where your kid says…

  • “Mom, you’d be even better if you yelled more.”

  • “Mom, I love you, but I just wish you listened less.”

  • “Dad, I wish you spent more time on your phone when we're together.”

  • “Dad, everything will be great between us if you just buy me big, shiny gifts to make up for all the time you’re gone.”

If the longest-running study on human development has taught us anything, it’s that doing the simple stuff has the biggest impact.

Betting on the future can be fun…

Or you can invest in the sure thing.

2. Business thing: Play the character you want to be.

Life is a constant acting exercise.

I don’t mean that in a negative way.

You play a different character at work or with your friends, than you do at home.

When you’re blocked on a difficult task, try this…

  • Pick a time.

  • Block it on your calendar.

  • Act like that person or character.

Ask yourself…

  • "What would they be doing right now?"

  • "How would they take action on this?"

  • "How would they handle this situation?"

Seems crazy, but it’s amazing what getting out of your head and into someone else’s can do for you.

3. Internet thing: Show me the incentive. I’ll show you the behavior.

Rewards can be a powerful tool (even for things a kid already does).

You take a lot of losses as a parent.

So, there’s nothing sweeter than when your kid is doing the thing you want AND they think they’ve got the upper hand.
